The Origin of Cebby
Born at Cebu Hacktoberfest 2024 — how a question about automating event discovery turned into a platform that pulls events from across the Cebu tech community into one place.
The Problem We All Knew
Cebu has a thriving tech community — JavaScript Cebu, PizzaPy, Laravel Cebu, and many others. Events are happening all the time.
But here’s the thing: there’s no central place to find them.
Each community manages their events on different platforms:
- JavaScript Cebu posts on Facebook
- Some groups use Meetup
- Others use Eventbrite
- Or pretty recently, new ones are in Luma
If you’re not following every single group on every single platform, you miss events. It’s that simple.
As a community organizer lead of JavaScript Cebu, I also get asked a lot - “what other events like this I can join?”.
Solutions That Didn’t Work
This wasn’t a new problem. As organizers, we’d tried to solve it before.
The form approach: Create a central form where organizers submit their events.
It didn’t work. Why?
- It’s another step to remember
- There’s no real incentive to do it
- When you’re busy organizing an event, submitting to yet another place is the last thing on your mind
The solution required extra work from organizers. That was the flaw.
The Question That Started Cebby
During Cebu Hacktoberfest 2024, I asked a different question:
“What if we could pull in the events automatically?”
The community organizations already post their events — on Facebook, Meetup, Eventbrite, wherever. What if we just… grabbed them?
No forms. No extra steps for organizers. The events are already out there. We just need to collect them in one place.
How It Works
The idea is simple:
- Keep track of Cebu tech community orgs that already post (Facebook, Meetup, Eventbrite, etc.)
- Pull events through APIs or scraping
- Aggregate them into one clean feed
- Let people discover what’s happening without hunting across platforms
Organizers don’t need to do anything different. They keep doing where they always post. Cebby does the work of bringing it all together.
Why This Approach Works
The previous solutions failed because they added friction for organizers.
Cebby removes friction instead:
- For organizers: Change nothing. Keep doing what you’re doing.
- For attendees: One place to check. No more FOMO.
The best tools work with existing behavior, not against it.
What I Learned
- Don’t ask people to change their habits — build around what they already do
- Automation beats manual processes — especially for busy people
- The best ideas often come from reframing the question — not “how do we get organizers to submit?” but “how do we get events without asking?”
What’s Next
Cebby is actively running and growing. The roadmap:
- More community sources
- Better filtering by topic, format, date
- Notifications for events you care about
The goal stays the same: make Cebu’s tech events visible without anyone having to do extra work.
